Review from Rehabs.com

For a facility with the name, "Hazelden," this rehab was surprisingly a disappointment. It was ineffective in helping my daughter. Here, young men and women live in dorm-like rooms adjacent to each other and then get kicked out each week due to forming relationships. The vast majority of residents are male and the regimented programming is primarily geared to meet men's needs. There are very few vegetarian food options and the meals cater to choices which can mostly be described as meat and potatoes entrees. There is no exercize facility. The worst is that this place is labeled dual diagnosis, yet it was virtually impossible to get a psychiatry appt. for much needed medical management until nearly two months after my daughter's arrival. Some of the recovering techs who monitor and grade the residents' behaviors are helpful, while others demean and unfairly needle the residents and micro-manage them. Our family liked that some therapy groups are very good. Overall, many young people fail here and are asked to leave instead of the counselors adding what they actually need: more recovery support. The director misrepresented various aspects of the program to our family prior to our daughter's arrival: falsely stating there were exercize groups that met weekly, that there was outstanding dual diagnosis support, that men and women had separate living areas, that there was excellent direction given to residents on stepping down in aftercare, etc. Following my daughter's stay at Hazelden Plymouth, the St. Paul facility was a huge and painful disappointment for her. Our family concluded that the St. Paul Hazelden was started by men and that it still is much better for men's recovery. It is a gross mismatch that falls way short of meeting the needs of most dual diagnosed women.

Review from Rehabs.com

Availability of help Only teach 12 step program. Very centered on AA and no other type or treatment options The day treatment program is effective if you follow the 12 steps and believe in AA and NA. If you want other options, they cant help you. Its very focused on peer process groups and not as much one on one counseling with clients. Very heavy influence of AA and fellowship. If that doesnt work for you, this place doesnt help.

Strengths: Private rooms smaller groups. Weaknesses: More leaned toward the alcholics than the addicts they should separate them. It's a much more comfortable place than a hospital rehab...more one on one..not totally 12 step that doesn't really apply totally to an addict. They handled the detox process much better than a hospital setting where your just an insurance payment.
